If you had to pick a football team consisting of eleven different animals, what would they be and what positions would they play?

I've done a few and all I would say is that I found the most useful questions to ask are the job specific ones. The very generic ones, any half decent candidate will prepare for an rattle off the answers. Just get to know the person a little bit as well, as they'll have to fit into your team. Imagine how they'll work alongside everyone else.

If our roles were switched and we were sitting on opposite sides of the desk, do you think you'd find this chair comfortable?

Several years ago iconducted a lengthy detailed and emotional interview with a welsh pelican.
He was an old stage actor, waspish of face and cheekier than a bitched dog.
Over a long and many coursed lunch moistened by several bottles of Montrachet De Beouf he regaled me with tales of pelican debauchery and aids sex on the avian gay scene of the 1970's. He had fucked every parrot of note on the london social scene.
His central and most raucous tale centred on the time he blew sherbet dib dab up the anus of freddie mercury at room at the top in ilford.
When he moved on to the night he saw the unfettered cock of 1980's newsreader nicholas witchell slapping the beak of several dirty ostrich, the dictaphone had run out.
Great fucking interview but sadly the pelican died of sex disease in 1984.

Maybe a good question would be "if you had I interview someone for a job, what questions would you ask?"
If he can't answer that he's got to be a complete div

appoint the right person for the job, pay no attention to how the candidate actually does in interview, anyone can learn to be interviewed. coerce or reduce the personnel rep to tears if you have one, they will only be interested in process.

I had to interview someone for an office junior about 12 years ago in the city. Asked them all what team they supported. Still see the successful candidate at away games.

There is a widely used interview strategy in the US called 'Targetted Selection'.
It is based on extensive analysis of mistakes made in hiring, which shows that most mistakes are caused by failing to understand what the candidate has actually done in his career up to the present.
In TS you ask questions ONLY about what the candidate has actually done. Absolutely no hypothetical questions.
If he/she starts saying 'in my last company we launched project X..' you stop them and ask them to define what role they played personally in the effort-in other words you get them to say 'I' instead of 'we'.
The aim is to ensure that at the end of the hour you get a full picture of what that person has done personally in his/her previous jobs (and outside work) - that's a much better basis for making your hiring decision than asking them what they would do if they found themselves on a desert island with only a tin opener and a piece of rope.
I learned it when I was working in the states and I still use it today. I really recommend it.
